Our young players of the ancient intellectual game have obtained impressive results at the World Schools Individual Chess Championship, which recently ended in one of the famous tourist cities of Thailand – Pattaya. Three medals – two gold and one bronze replenished the “medal box” of Turkmen sportsmen. Annagozel Mekanova, a six-grader of the secondary school No. 35 in the city of Mary was unrivalled in classical chess events in the under -13 age group. Each game lasted an hour and a half, and extra 30 seconds were added after each move. About 40 young chess players from Russia, India, China, the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Australia, Mongolia and other countries competed in the same age grou p. During the games (held in the Swiss-system format), A. Mekanova earned 7 points out of nine possible: she won clear-cut victories in six games, agreed to end two games in a draw, and lost one game. Leila Shohradova won the second gold medal for the Turkmen team in the under-9 age group. The second-grader of the school No. 8 in Garashsyzlyk etrap, Lebap velayat was the best in the blitz events, in which each game lasted 3 minutes with extra 2 seconds added after each move. L. Shohradova achieved the best result, having won 7 points out of 7 possible. Mengli Ovezova, a ten-grader of the secondary school No. 7 in the city of Ashgabat became a bronze medal winner. She also achieved a spectacular result in the blitz events in the under-17 age group, having gained 5 points out of 7 possible. Byagul Ezizova showed good results in the same age group and scored 5 points. She was among those, who competed for silver and bronze medals. In such cases, judges consider the ratio of chess players – unfortunately, our compatriot won fourth place.
