Last week, a ministerial meeting of participating countries of the Memorandum of Understanding on Regional Cooperation in the sphere of drug control was held in the conference hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. A high level of the Ashgabat meeting was stressed by the fact that Foreign Minister of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan E. Abdyldaev, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan S. Aslov, Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Yu. Fedotov, UNODC Regional Representative for Central Asia Ashita Mittal, Deputy Director of the Executive Committee of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization N. Jigitekov, EU Special Representative for Central Asia Peter Burian, as well as experts and specialists from the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Uzbekistan had arrived in the Turkmen capital to participate in the forum. Representatives of several ministries and departments of Turkmenistan, the mass media also attended the forum. The meeting agenda was focused on a number of issues connected with working out of concerted efforts of the region’s countries to combat illicit drug turnover. Given the topicality of the issues of combating illicit drug turnover for the Central Asian region, our country attaches special importance to strengthening cooperation, and actively participates in the relevant specialized agencies’ activity. In particular, Turkmenistan has accumulated extensive experience of interaction within the framework of the Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Center for combating the illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors (CARICC), the European Union Border Management Program in Central Asia (BOMCA), and the EU Central Asia Drug Action Program (CADAP). Turkmenistan also takes part in a number of intergovernmental projects aimed at combating drug trafficking and strengthening border control. The forum resulted in signing the 2015-2019 UNODC Regional Program for Central Asian countries, as well as adopting the Ministerial Declaration.
