The top-level talks between the Presidents of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan with the participation of the delegations of the two countries focused on the regional safety and bilateral cooperation. Particular attention in this regard was paid to the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline. At present, construction work on Turkmenistan’s section of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline is underway. Moreover, the technical aspects of laying the gas pipeline on the territory of Afghanistan are considered. The implementation of this ambitious project will significantly contribute to the social and economic development of the countries, participating in the project, as well as the states in the region. Another important project is the railway from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan. Construction of the Atamyrat-Ymamnazar-Akina section of the Asian transnational line was completed last year. The aspects of construction of the railway on the territory of Afghanistan are discussed at present. It is planned to lay the railway to the borders with Tajikistan as well as to reconstruct the Serhetabat-Turgundy railway. Turkmenistan significantly contributes to the social and economic development of Afghanistan through the construction of additional electrical power facilities towards Afghanistan that will allow increasing the volumes of electric energy supplies to the neighbouring state and other markets. Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan and Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Tajikistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan are very promising areas. The projects will allow connecting the electroconductive systems in the countries of the Central and South Asia. Like always, the agenda of the Turkmen-Afghan talks covers cooperation in the humanitarian sphere. Turkmenistan will continue providing assistance to the south neighbor in training highly-qualified specialists in various areas as well as teaching students from Afghanistan. The trade and economic sphere is one of the priority areas of the bilateral cooperation. In 2016, the gross volume of the trade turnover between our countries made up USD 547 million. Moreover, the leaders of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan underlined the possibility of increasing the volumes of the mutual trade and its diversification and emphasized that the Intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation would work in this area. Businessmen play a key role in this sphere. Opening of the Turkmen-Afghan Trading House in Mazar-i-Sharif in the nearest future will promote establishing business relations between entrepreneurs of the two countries. Turkmenistan and Afghanistan follow the common strategic goals at the international arena. Among them are secure of peace, safety and sustainable development in Central Asia and on the planet. Both countries actively cooperate within the framework of the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Islamic Cooperation Organization and the Economic Cooperation Organization. The talks in Ashgabat confirmed the inviolability of the fraternal and good-neighbourly relations between our countries, their readiness for the close economic cooperation, joint implementation of large-scale transport and energy projects. On November 14-15, 2017, Ashgabat will host the 7th Regional Economic Conference on Afghanistan. The negotiations on various aspects of the long-term regional economic cooperation will continue at the forum.
