The Executive Committee of the Fund has been founded in Turkmenistan that will be chairing the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) in 2017–2019. The relevant Decision has been signed on Friday by the President of IFAS, President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, at the Government session. The document approves the structure of the IFAS Executive Committee; its location; the number of the Committee staff. The IFAS Executive Committee pursues its activity under the IFAS Regulations and the agreement between the Governments of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan on the status of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea and its organizations. The IFAS Executive Committee ensures the practical implementation of decisions by the Council of the Founding States; President and the Board of the Fund on the Problems of the Aral Sea basin; the implementation of programs and projects targeted at improving the environmental situation in this region; and promotes development of cooperation with international organizations, donor states, environmental and other funds. Signing the Decision, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has stated that the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea is a universal collaboration platform for the countries of the region to overcome the consequences of the Aral crisis; improve the environmental and socio-economic situation in the Aral Sea basin. The Turkmen leader highlighted the special significance of environmental and water diplomacy, and reiterated Turkmenistan’s commitment to cooperation with all interested foreign partners, including within the IFAS format.
