Today, independent neutral Turkmenistan is celebrating one of the most important dates on the national calendar – Constitution and Magtymguly Fragi’s Poetry Day. The national holiday, which symbolically links the adoption of the country’s Constitution and celebration in honor of the great poet and thinker, represents the continuity of spiritual and democratic experience of the Turkmen nation, and glorifies the national unity and concord. By tradition, the festive events started at the Constitution Monument. Among those in attendance were government members, leaders of Mejlis, ministries and agencies, Ashgabat city khyakimlik, heads of the diplomatic missions accredited to Turkmenistan, and foreign businessmen. Representatives of public organizations, labor collectives from the capital, mass media, honorable elders, students, art and cultural workers also took part in the festivities. The President of Turkmenistan laid a wreath at the Constitution Monument, which symbolizes the inviolability of foundations of the democratic, law-governed and secular state, and solidarity of the people of Turkmenistan. After the head of state, the ceremony participants laid wreaths and bouquets of fresh flowers. As President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov has stressed in his Welcoming Address to the people of Turkmenistan for the occasion, the adoption of the Constitution of Turkmenistan twenty-five years ago was one of the most significant historic events in the period when the strong and secure foundations for our independent state, which had embarked on the path of independent and free development, were built. While preserving its principle provisions, the country’s Constitution is a flexible legal instrument, which is being updated in line with the comprehensive, wide-ranging reforms. Embracing the best national and world experience of state structure, national and universal values, the Constitution of Turkmenistan incorporates the fundamental tasks of building a democratic, legal and secular state, which is oriented towards tackling social objectives and is building a competitive economy. Today, thousands of Ashgabat residents and guests to the capital attended a solemn event in the park in Magtymguly Avenue, where a stone sculpture of great Fragi stands over the mirror-like surface of the fountain. The President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov was the first to lay a wonderful wreath – as a token of deep gratitude and reverence for the great Turkmen poet’s civic courage and poetic talent. Following the head of state, ceremony participants laid flowers at the monument. The immortal poems by the poet were recited as a hymn to independence, national unity, peace and concord on the Turkmen land. Permeated with humanistic ideals, the works by Magtymguly have become a significant contribution to the treasure house of world literature. They answer to their lofty aims: educate spiritually, morally and aesthetically. Monuments to the prominent Turkmen thinker have been erected in our county and beyond. Yesterday, a ceremony of unveiling a monument to Magtymguly took place in the border province of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. *** Flower-laying ceremonies at the monuments to Magtymguly and other poets were held in squares of the administrative centers in all the regions of the country. The holiday festivities culminated in concerts given by performing artists. They devoted their performances to the achievements and prosperity of the native country, the great Turkmen literary genius – Magtymguly – the singer of souls, whose literary heritage is an enduring spiritual and moral bequest to the current and future generations.
