A representative office of one of the world’s biggest IT corporations – Microsoft – opened in Turkmenistan in August 2015. The decision was made after a preliminary analysis and high assessment by the company’s experts of the country’s fast-developing market prospects and demand for efficient high-technology solutions. Since inception of its Ashgabat office, the company has been actively working towards training its customers and partners to apply the latest information technologies, introducing the people of Turkmenistan to the most advanced software programs, and supporting the innovative development of key sectors. At the Cabinet session on March 17, President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov addressed the information system development issues and highlighted the need to teach computer literacy to the younger generation beginning with primary school age. Microsoft offers to introduce the study of the following advanced program products into the curriculum of Turkmenistan’s specialized higher education institutions: Windows Azure (a cloud computing platform), Microsoft Visual Studio (a software and application development environment) as well as Microsoft Dynamics – a system that helps to optimize and improve enterprise management. The company is taking part in the development of the Ashgabat Olympic Complex’s infrastructure through the application of its program products. Today, the company with extensive experience of cooperation with governments of different countries has become a prospective and reliable partner of Turkmenistan. In 2012, the Law “On Copyright and Related Rights Protection” was adopted. In 2016, our country acceded to the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works. Stable growth rates of Turkmenistan’s economy are making a positive contribution to the IT market development in our country. Statistical data testify to a progressive increase in the number of computers per capita, Internet and cellular phone users. As part of the President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov-initiated state import substitution program, massive efforts are being made in the country to start the production of computers. This will lead to a more dynamic advancement of the information technology industry in Turkmenistan.
