Mejlis of Turkmenistan elected an Ombudsman

The Mejlis of Turkmenistan elected Yazdursun Gurbannazarova to the post of the Ombudsman. The corresponding decree of the National Parliament “On the election of the Ombudsman” was adopted at the regular nineteenth meeting of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan of fifth convocation, which took place today. The activities of the Ombudsman are regulated by the relevant law of Turkmenistan, which meets the country's international obligations in the humanitarian sphere, taking into account the practice and experience of the world's most developed democracies, and creating strong guarantees for the protection of human rights and freedoms by the Ombudsman, their observance and respect by state authorities and officials. As envisaged by this law, three candidates were nominated for consideration by parliamentarians, out of which the people's representatives made their choice by means of secret ballot.
