In celebration of State Flag Day, Turkmen mountain climbers have been making annual ascents to the highest peak of Turkmenistan, the Airybaba (3,139 m), for about 20 years to plant a national flag on the summit of the mountain. In honor of 2017, declared as The Year of Health and Inspiration on the initiative of President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov, The State Information Agency (TDH) and the Executive Committee of the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games have initiated “Ascent” Project, as part of which a group of mountaineers will ascend the Airybaba to plant the 2017 Asian Games symbol with the image of an Alkhalteke horse – as a call for new achievements and heights, to which the “heavenly” horse is able to rise. The project aims to popularize the Games, a healthy lifestyle, sport and travel as one of the most fascinating ways to learn more about your home country and the world. The project is being realized with the assistance of the administrations of Lebap velayat and Koitendag State Reserve. The ascent to the Airybaba in February is very similar to the “conquest” of other well-known summits in the world. At a height of more than 3,000 meters above sea level lies a high-mountain area, the kingdom of stones and snow with sparse vegetation. The summit of the Kointendag is our country’s only spot where snow does not melt from October until late May. The team of climbers with our country’s best mountaineers on board, who have made successful ascents of the mountains in the Caucasus, the Tien Shan, the Pamir and the fairytale-like Himalayas will have to withstand deep snow, harsh winds and frost (the temperature on the top of the mountain and in the vicinity is always below zero in winter). In recent years mountaineering has been developing fast in Turkmenistan. There are two mountain climbing clubs: “Agama” in Ashgabat and “Mert” in Balkanabat.
