President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov met with Secretary General of the Energy Charter Urban Rusnak. The parties exchanged opinions on the issues of international cooperation in the energy sector, and joint work given Turkmenistan’s chairmanship of the 2017 Energy Charter Conference. Mr. Urban Rusnak highly appraised Turkmenistan’s initiatives on ensuring global energy security. As President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov highlighted, Turkmenistan seeks to put its vast hydrocarbon potential to work for the benefit of all mankind, focusing the world community’s attention on energy security issues. One of the key aspects of the country’s strategy is the diversification, extended geography of natural gas exports, creation of multi-vector gas transmission system. The issues of Turkmenistan’s chairmanship of the 2017 Energy Charter Conference were also under discussion. The international legal regulation of energy resources transit was identified as one of the priorities. This is one of the primary objectives of the Energy Charter, which unites scores of European and Asian countries. The parties stressed the importance of the relevant UN Resolution adopted on the Turkmen side’s proposal, and the need for greater cooperation with the United Nations and other international organizations. International events to be organized in Turkmenistan, Europe, China, and the US are aimed to advance energy dialogue regionally - in the European and South Asian directions, as well as globally. Forums of the Energy Charter, expert meetings, high-level international conferences on sustainable development of world energy are expected to be held, including in Ashgabat, Brussels, Hong Kong, and New York – on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
