The third meeting of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Deputy Chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan in charge of the spheres of culture and education, heads and representatives of relevant ministries and departments, Ashgabat hyakimlik, and journalists attended the meeting.
The composition of this commission was approved by the special Resolution of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on October 23, 2020.
Opening the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov underlined the importance of expanding cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNESCO.
Meeting participants discussed the process of inclusion of numerous historical and cultural sites and crafts of Turkmenistan to the UNESCO lists. In this regard, the report on drafting nomination dossie for inclusion of felt-making and smithcraft, Turkmen tazy and hunting falcon in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List and the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
It was underlined the importance of multilateral cooperation on the UNESCO platform, including on the implementation of tasks arising from the Agreement between the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the joint promotion, management and protection of the components of the Serial transnational nomination Silk Road: Zarafshan -Karakum corridor" in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.
Moreover, it was reported on the work done on the project implemented jointly with Iran to include the art of Turkmen embroidery in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
The report on the implementation of projects to create UNESCO Chairs in a number of universities in Turkmenistan, as well as the introduction of Turkmenistan's secondary schools (one school from Ashgabat and one school from each velayat) into the system of UNESCO Associated Schools.
The tasks on including Ashgabat in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the Design category were discussed. Meeting participants discussed proposals for the inclusion of natural monuments of our country in the List of Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The report on the work of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO within the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Government of Turkmenistan and UNESCO for 2021-2023, signed on April 15, 2021 was presented at the end of the meeting. In this regard, it was emphasized the importance to expand cooperation with this authoritative international organization.
A number of other issues related to the work of the National Commission for UNESCO were also considered at the meeting.
