The first meeting Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-US

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale and Acting Minister of Foreign affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Hanif Atmar took place in the first videoconference meeting of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-US format. During the meeting, the parties discussed a number of issues of political, trade, economic and humanitarian nature. In particular, special attention was paid to rendering assistance to Afghanistan and promoting inter-Afghan negotiations aimed at ending the long-term armed conflict and establishing peace in this country. The firm position of Turkmenistan, which advocates the use of exclusively political and diplomatic mechanisms to achieve stability in the neighboring state, was emphasized. To ensure this, in accordance with the principles of neutrality, Turkmenistan is ready to provide its political space for the next rounds of inter-Afghan negotiations. Turkmenistan also voiced its position on security issues. Our country stands for the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. Among others, the issues of social nature, including the promotion of equal rights for women and their economic empowerment were discussed during the meeting. The parties also considered the possibilities of developing trade relations between Afghanistan, the United States and the Central Asian region by improving the efficiency of customs and other procedures in accordance with the existing Trade and Investment Framework Agreement between the United States and Central Asia (TIFA). The importance of the development of transport, transit and fuel and energy corridors was underlined. Particular attention was paid to the possibilities of joint implementation of infrastructure projects initiated by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, including such energy bridges as TAPI and TAP. In the aspect of humanitarian cooperation, the parties focused on the importance to coordinate efforts in the fight against the pandemic. The parties agreed to continue an active dialogue to strengthen cooperation in order to ensure peace, security and economic growth in Central Asia. The Joint Statement was signed on the outcomes of the talks.
