On March 17, a telephone talk was held between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov. During the conversation, President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and President Islam Karimov discussed the state and prospects of Turkmen-Uzbek cooperation in its key areas in the context of implementing the bilateral agreements reached, priorities of the two countries’ socio-economic development and future plans. The transport and communications sector was also outlined as one of the priority areas of interaction. Turkmenistan has launched a number of initiatives in this field, which were supported by the Uzbek side, and are currently being implemented. Having also emphasized the significance of the humanitarian field as an integral part of the interstate dialogue, the heads of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan spoke in favor of all-round strengthening the fruitful contacts in this sector. In continuation of the talk, the sides also exchanged opinions on the topical issues of regional and international matters of mutual interest. In this regard, the counterparts noted the two countries’ adherence to the regional and global efforts in such an important direction as ecology. Taking an active attitude to the issue, Turkmenistan puts forward concrete initiatives, in particular, the proposal to establish a specialized agency under the auspices of the United Nations – the Regional Center for technologies related to climate change in Central Asia, which was also announced at the United Nations World Conference in the city of Sendai (Japan). Taking advantage of the opportunity, the Turkmen leader wished the head of neighboring state successful presidential elections to be held in Uzbekistan at the end of the current month. At the end of the telephone talk, the President of Turkmenistan and the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan congratulated each other on the forthcoming International Nowruz Holiday, having also addressed their congratulations and best wishes to the fraternal peoples of the two countries.
