The election of our country as a member of the UN Economic and Social Council for 2019-2021 was another evidence of the international recognition and the high assessment of the constructive foreign and internal policy pursued by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The decision was taken during the 96th meeting of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly. Congratulating the compatriots on this event, the Turkmen leader confirmed the commitment of our independent neutral state to address the important tasks of the present time, to ensure the creativity and sustainable development of the whole humanity. This fact was especially significant in the year that is marked in our country under the motto “Turkmenistan is the heart of the Great Silk Road” that means the revival of the historical mission of the country to unite the states and peoples in the aspiration for mutual understanding, friendship and progress. At the same time, the election of Turkmenistan as a member of one of the main UN agencies that coordinates the global cooperation in the economic and social spheres testifies to increasing international authority of our country. The scope of work of the UN Economic and Social Council where Turkmenistan will represent the countries of Asia and the Pacific region includes the support to the economic and social progress, in particular raising of living standards and boosting the employment, cooperation in the health care sphere, culture and education, creation of conditions to ensure the universal respect of human rights and freedoms. The Council conducts research on these issues, publishes reports and takes part in the organization of international conferences, contributes to the implementation of their decisions. Within a year, ECOSOC holds several sessions, roundtables and discussions in expert groups with the representatives of civil society. The Council is also authorized to convene special meetings on humanitarian emergencies as and when necessary.
