More than 24 percent of eligible voters vote in the election of Mejlis deputies, Khalk Maslakhaty and Gengesh members

The elections of Mejlis deputies (the sixth convocation), Khalk Maslakhaty and Gengesh members are now well underway in Turkmenistan. Among those, who stand as candidates in the elections, are the worthiest people, who have won high respect and trust of their compatriots. Several candidates are competing for each seat in the national parliament, Khalk Maslakhaty and Gengesh. This makes the current elections (like the previous ones) highly competitive, transparent, and democratic. According to the Central Election and Referendum Commission of Turkmenistan, polling stations in all the constituencies opened on time – at 7 o’clock in the morning. Voter turnout was as follows till 9 a.m.: 24.04 percent of eligible voters voted for Mejlis deputies; 24.18 percent – for members of velayat, etrap and city Khalk Maslakhaty; 24.19 percent – for Gengesh members. As is well known, extensive preparations had been organized in the run-up to the current elections. In particular, 489 candidates were registered for velayat Khalk Maslakhaty; 2,570 candidates for etrap and city Khalk Maslakhaty; 13,215 candidates for Gengesh, and 284 candidates for Mejlis deputies. The candidates were nominated by the political parties and civil groups. The elections are being closely monitored by international and local observers.
