In Ashgabat, a regular meeting of authorized representatives of the Caspian States started its work. The meeting theme, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the State Service of Maritime and River Transport and the State Enterprise for the Caspian Sea under the President of Turkmenistan, is the approval of the draft Agreement on transport cooperation of the Caspian States. The document was developed by the Turkmen side in compliance with President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov’s initiatives, announced at the Summit of heads of Caspian States, held in 2014 in Astrakhan (Russian Federation). The meeting emphasized the Caspian countries’ interests to strengthen partnership in the transport sector, enhance the role of the region in the system of Eurasian transport communications. Transit potential of the Caspian Sea, associated by the favorable geographical position at the junction of the continental routes “East-West” and “North-South”, objectively dictates the necessity of coordinating efforts, increasing the cooperation in the field of maritime, motor, rail and air transportation of passengers and freight, as well as effective logistics. It was stressed the actuality of the Resolution “Role of transport and transit corridors in ensuring international cooperation for sustainable development”, initiated by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and adopted by the UN General Assembly. The participants of the meeting noted that under the preparation for the regular summit of heads of the Caspian States, experts carried out an extensive work on key lines of cooperation. The position conciliation process is nearing completion on the new draft Agreement, the signing of which will serve to strengthen ties between the countries of the region. Tomorrow, regional meeting will continue its work.
