On May 30, 2025, in the framework of his working visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan to participate in the first «Central Asia – Italy» Summit, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov met with the President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic Giorgia Meloni.
Having warmly greeted each other, the Head of State and the President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic expressed confidence that the current meeting would contribute to further development of Turkmen-Italian relations.
Turkmenistan attaches great importance to strengthening cooperation with European countries, including Italy, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized, and conveyed words of greetings from the National Leader of Turkmen People, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. It was noted, the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan warmly recalls his official visit to Italy while being the head of state.
Having emphasized the importance of the «Central Asia – Italy» format initiated by the Italian side as an effective mechanism for establishing strong mutually beneficial interstate relations, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov confirmed Turkmenistan’s readiness to contribute to their further development.
Having noted with satisfaction that bilateral relations are being developed consistently and on a long-term basis, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni conveyed her best wishes to the National Leader of Turkmen People.
It was emphasized that the two countries successfully interact in the international arena, in particular, within the framework of the United Nations, the European Union, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
In this regard, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov expressed gratitude to the Italian side for its continued support of Turkmenistan’s neutrality and international initiatives.
The President of Turkmenistan noted that the Forum at the level of heads of state, government and heads of international structures, scheduled for December 12 of current year in Ashgabat will be one of the main large-scale events dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the country’s neutrality and the International Year of Peace and Trust and invited Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to take part in it.
Having expressed gratitude for the invitation, Prime Minister of Italy highly appraised the contribution of Turkmenistan to strengthening global peace and sustainable development. It was emphasized that Italy supports and will continue to support Turkmenistan’s initiatives in this dimension.
It was noted that bilateral trade and economic cooperation is steadily increasing in the oil and gas sector, in the field of transport and textile industry, and through business structures. A clear confirmation of this is the annual growth of mutual trade turnover.
Having noted the existence of great opportunities for developing partnership in such areas as energy and the chemical industry, railway infrastructure, ecology, agriculture and water management, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov confirmed Turkmenistan’s readiness to consider the proposals of the Italian side.
In order to systematize trade and economic cooperation, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov proposed to establish a joint mechanism in the format of an intergovernmental commission or a business council.
Having supported the proposal of the Head of State, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed Italy’s readiness to strengthen partnership in this vector.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation is an integral part of bilateral relations. A clear example of this is the study of the Italian language in higher educational institutions and secondary schools of Turkmenistan, long-term cooperation in the field of archeology.
During the meeting, the President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic invited the President of Turkmenistan to visit Italy in any convenient time.
In conclusion, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and the President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic Giorgia Meloni wished each other good health and success in their government work, as well as peace and prosperity to the peoples of two friendly countries.
