Today, the Turkmen capital hosted the online Central Asian subregional consultations to prepare for the 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women. Turkmenistan and UN Women Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia organized the event, which was dedicated to issues of gender equality in the light of climate change.

In this connection, it should be noted that last year, Turkmenistan was elected to the membership of the Executive Board of the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women) for 2020-2024.

The goal of the given meeting is to facilitate Central Asian countries to prepare for the consultations of the 66th session and agree main general ideas for formulation of a subregional vision of its prospectus, experience and recommendations on totally changing situations of actions in the fields of climate change, environment and reduction of danger of natural disasters.

Chairperson of the Mejlis of the Milli Gengesh, representatives of a number of ministries and departments, the Institute of State, Law and Democracy, Central Board of the Union of Women and the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan represented the Turkmen side there.

Participants of the consultations included members of national parliaments, experts in gender issues, national coordinators of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), employees of research and analytical centres, as well as representatives of the Central Asian Women's Dialogue, the Centre for Emergency Situations and Disaster Risk Reduction for Central Asia.

This year, the 66th session of the Commission will take up the theme “Achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes”.

In the two sessions, they discussed issues of climate change and its impact on the status of women in the region, exchanged advanced experience, and developed recommendations on actions in the field of climate change, environment and reduction of natural disasters.
