The Institute of Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan has recently developed an antiseptic preparation named Iodomal. Turkmen specialists carried out research studies on potatoes to find an alternative to polyvinyl alcohol, which is imported into the country. The research activities were conducted by the mobile water, soil and air laboratory mounted on a KAMAZ truck. It is well equipped to perform a wide range of research studies and to deal with complex practical problems. By dissolving edible potato starch, the chemists have produced a high-molecular compound, which rivals the properties of polyvinyl alcohol. The antiseptic preparation synthesized by the Turkmen specialists helps to extend antiseptic effects of iodine and it does not cause skin irritation. As estimated, with the use of locally available raw materials, the antiseptic will be several times cheaper than its foreign equivalent. The preparation retains its antiseptic properties for six months. As the studies show Iodomal (the patent application has been already filed for the antiseptic) has identical properties with Iodanol, the antiseptic, which is commonly used across the world. The product developed by the Institute of Chemistry (the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan) is expected to make a significant contribution to the development of the domestic pharmaceutical industry, to bring considerable benefits by reducing imports and to produce profits in terms of its export potential.
