Parliamentarians Discuss Health Care Affordability

Today, representatives of the Mejlis have participated in a webinar on universal health coverage in times of COVID-19 and parliamentary best practices, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union. As President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasizes, given the serious global situation, special emphasis is now on undertaking consolidated, mutually agreed steps to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease and to tackle the pandemic aftermath. In this context, medical diplomacy has taken on new urgency. It is intended to boost fruitful international cooperation in this field. The online forum focused on the issues concerning the implementation of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Resolution “Achieving Universal Health Coverage by 2030: The Role of Parliaments in Ensuring the Right to Health”. The webinar participants evaluated the work done in this area, discussed the steps taken to provide people with access to quality medical services in the context of fighting COVID-19 and to ensure effective emergency preparedness and response, as well as to tackle challenges in the post-pandemic recovery. Countries’ best practices in universal health coverage and national parliaments’ work on establishing legal frameworks received special attention during the interactive meeting. Notably, Turkmenistan has attained considerable success in health protection, which is a top-priority of the state policy carried out by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. Under the guidance of the nation’s leader, the domestic healthcare system is continuously improving, receiving legal and technological assistance. Alongside with the efforts made to modernize the sector’s facilities, to employ innovative methods and advanced technologies, and to improve the quality of healthcare services rendered to the people of Turkmenistan, our country is taking comprehensive measures to prevent diseases, encourage healthier lifestyles in the society, and engage people in regular physical activities. Fostering the effective collaboration with the World Health Organization and other specialized UN agencies, authoritative international organizations, Turkmenistan has proposed concrete initiatives aimed at strengthening regional and global partnership in the fields of science and medicine, and combining efforts to deal with burning issues of today. Concluding the webinar, its participants spoke for promoting the constructive cooperation to ensure even closer interparliamentary relations and to share knowledge and expertise in lawmaking.
