The issues on sharing experience in the field of intellectual property and copyright protection, as well as the development of training programmes and materials with the focus on the use of information and communication technologies were discussed during the video conference meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The experts from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), representatives of ministries and departments of the country, and the media attended the forum. The video conference focused on expanding the IP legal base in Turkmenistan, in particular, our country’s accession to the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled, as well as the Rome Convention for the Protection of Performers, Producers of Phonograms and Broadcasting Organizations. An interesting discussion on the best practices in resolving regulatory issues related to IP rights took place at the conference. Particular attention was paid to legal registration and copyright protection in Turkmenistan. The curricula and treaties in force at WIPO were also considered. Within the framework of the forum, the representatives of universities and research institutes in our country shared their experience in using international standards in the field of intellectual property policy. During the videoconference, WIPO experts presented various training programmes that are used to expand knowledge and skills in the field of intellectual property. Those speaking during the videoconference meeting underlined that distance learning was a widely-used method, emphasizing their willingness to assist Turkmenistan in developing educational programmes, continuing professional development, and providing teaching aids in this direction. During the interested exchange of views, emphasis was placed on the high potential of partnerships, the prospects for expanding cooperation in the context of the implementation of the socio-economic development programme in the country. Moreover, the participants of the meeting exchanged views on accession to the Rome Convention for the Protection of Performers, Producers of Phonograms and Broadcasting Organizations. Turkmenistan adopted the Law on Copyright and Related Rights, improves legislation in this area in order to bring it in line with international law. Noting the growing relevance of copyright protection given the ongoing changes in the sphere of business and technology, it was noted that the Turkmen side was ready to consider and study all incoming proposals to expand cooperation. At the end of the conference, the participants expressed the willingness to develop a productive exchange of experience with WIPO and other international organizations in this area.
