On April 16, during the 59th meeting of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, at the initiative of Turkmenistan and with the co-authorship of 72 UN member states, the Resolution "The Role of the United Nations Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia" was unanimously adopted.

The President of Turkmenistan put forward this initiative during his video address at the plenary meeting of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2020.

The Resolution notes that the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia makes a significant contribution to the development of regional dialogue, and the joint efforts of the Government of Turkmenistan and the Center are aimed at establishing peace, stability and security in the region.

The Resolution reaffirms the importance of preventive diplomacy in supporting the UN's efforts to assist in the peaceful settlement of disputes and recognizes the role of the Regional Center in countering transnational threats. In particular, it underlines the task of the Regional Center for the development of cooperation between the states of the region in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism in order to comprehensively implement all components of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.

The Resolution recommends the Center to liaise with the governments of the region for sustainable development through preventive diplomacy and dialogue. The document also underlines the importance of cooperation to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the region.
