Nearby the settlement of Bagabat, Ak Bugdai etrap, Akhal velayat, an event has been held to destroy narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, seized during a number of special anti-drug operations conducted by law enforcement and military agencies.
Co-organized by the Government of Turkmenistan, the State Coordinating Commission for Combating Narcotic Drugs under the Cabinet of Ministers, and the Ministry of the Interior, the event is timed to coincide with International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Among those in attendance were senior officials of Turkmenistan’s security agencies, representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations, including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), OSCE, public organizations, and the mass media.
After the event participants were demonstrated the narcotic drugs, anyone wishing had a chance to burn a pack of these poisonous substances in special stoves. In accordance with the rules, the entire burning process was controlled by law enforcement officials and authorized experts.
During the talks between President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in the Turkmen capital on June 13, the parties highlighted their commitment to further coordinated efforts to counteract illicit drug trafficking.
Turkmenistan is a party to several international United Nations Conventions Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, regional and international projects and programs of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and the European Union.
