On June 12, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov paid a working visit to Azerbaijan to participate in the official ceremony of opening of the I European Games “Baku- 2015”.
In the airport of Baku, the official dignitaries of the Azerbaijan Republic, as well as representatives of the I European Games Steering Committee, welcomed the Turkmen leader.
Therefrom, the motorcade of the head of Turkmenistan proceeded to the residence of the Azerbaijani leader – “Genchlik”, where the meeting of the Presidents Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and Ilham Aliyev was held.
Truly grateful to his Turkmen colleague for accepting invitation to participate in the large sport holiday in the Azerbaijani capital, President Ilham Aliyev has particularly emphasized that Azerbaijan considers the visit of President of Turkmenistan as the event of paramount importance, especially on such an important day for the country. Moreover, it is also regarded as another expression of the strengthening good-neighborly and brotherly relations which received a new impetus over recent years.
Expressing gratitude to the head of Azerbaijan for giving a hearty welcome to the delegation from Turkmenistan, including the volunteers, President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov congratulated the friendly people for being afforded the honor of hosting such an important and representative sports forum, and wished the Azerbaijani athletes success and new striking victories in the upcoming prestigious competitions of the international level.
In the course of the trust-based and constructive meeting, the leaders of two states gave consideration to the implementation progress of the earlier-achieved agreements and exchanged views on the focal issues of partnership successfully developing both in the bilateral and multilateral format, in particular, in the frames of the authoritative international and regional organizations.
The Turkmenistan’s and Azerbaijan’s proximity of views was stressed on the topical aspects of international life, as well as the countries’ active role in searching for optimum solutions of the contemporary global problems.
Confirming the two neighbor-states’ firm adherence to the centuries-old relations of friendship and fraternity, the interlocutors expressed mutual confidence that the constructive cooperation established during recent years would in the nearest future advance upward due to the new large-scale projects of national and regional significance. Thus, great prospects are available for expanding bilateral cooperation in the sphere of: ensuring energy security; transporting the natural gas from the Caspian region to Europe; creating the modern transit-transport infrastructure, given the advantageous geographical location of the neighboring countries possessing huge hydrocarbon resources.
Applauding the fact that Azerbaijan was one of the first countries to support the Resolution on Turkmenistan’s neutrality, the head of state invited his Azerbaijani colleague to participate in the grand festivities Turkmenistan would celebrate this year’s December on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Turkmenistan neutral status.
Regarding upgrading of relationships in the cultural-humanitarian sphere as the issue of paramount importance, the head of Turkmen state expressed gratitude for the last year’s festive measures and events organized in Azerbaijan in honor of the 290-anniversary of the genius Turkmen poet and an outstanding thinker of the East - Magtymguly Fragi, deeply worshiped throughout the world.
Special consideration was given to unleashing the potential of interaction in sports - the sphere Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan give heightened attention to. In this regard, President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov expressed great interest in the experience exchange in organizing large-scale international competitions and events in the light of the upcoming V Asian Indoor Games and Martial Arts which will be held in Ashgabat in 2017.
At the end of meeting, the heads of two states addressed wishes of happiness and prosperity to the peoples of Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, having expressed firm belief in successful continuation of the fruitful dialogue which completely meets the priorities of the neighboring countries’ state development policies.

In the afternoon, in the hotel “Four Seasons Baku” ( a guest residence of the head of Turkmenistan for the time of his working visit), there was a meeting of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had also arrived in Baku to participate in the opening ceremony of the I European Games.
During the meeting, President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the most important aspects of interstate cooperation, international and regional issues of mutual interest.
President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov spoke in favor of inviting in the near future the leaders of Turkmenistan, the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Turkish Republic for holding the meeting in the Turkmen coast of Hazar (the Caspian Sea).
Besides, the nation’s leader repeated his invitation to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to participate in the International conference dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s neutrality, which will be held under the auspices of the United Nations in Ashgabat in the current year’s December.
Welcoming intensification over recent years of the bilateral trade and economic relations confirmed by the growth of the countries’ trade turnover, President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have emphasized the importance of business forums held regularly in the two friendly countries. In particular, the head of Turkmenistan said that the upcoming Exhibition of Building Materials Industry of the Republic of Turkey in Ashgabat in the current month would once again demonstrate availability of high potential of interstate interaction.
The meeting focused also on the prospects of cooperation in the transport and communication sector, given the advantageous geographical and geopolitical situation of the two countries. The unique economic and energy potential of the Caspian region - an interlink between Europe and Asia, offers broad opportunities for expanding partnership in this sphere. In this context, the heads of Turkmenistan and Turkey welcomed implementation of new joint projects designed to serve the prosperity of the two friendly countries and sustainable development of the entire region.
Among the most important directions of bilateral relations, the interlocutors sorted out cooperation in the fuel and energy sector.
During the talk, special attention was paid to the expansion of cultural and humanitarian ties, regarding them among the main trends of bilateral relations. As President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov emphasized, a mosque erected in Kounyaurgench etrap of Dashoguz velayat with the participation of Turkish partners would further strengthen the spiritual ties between the peoples of Turkmenistan and Turkey.
At the end of the meeting, welcoming the two states’ intention to develop the centuries-old relations of friendship and fruitful cooperation, President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed to the fraternal nations wishes of happiness, prosperity and new successes on the way of creation and progress.
...In the evening, the motorcade of the President of Turkmenistan headed to the Olympic Stadium of Baku city – the arena of solemn opening ceremony of the European Games.
Steering Committee of the First European Games “Baku 2015” signed the direct transmission agreements with many countries. Sports channel of the national television of Turkmenistan also carries live broadcast of the European Games attended by a group of volunteers from our country.
More than 6,000 athletes from 49 countries will participate in the 20 sport events of the Games to be held until June 28. In 12 sport disciplines the athletes will fight for the right to compete at the 2016 Olympics: in Boxing, Wrestling, Cycling, Volleyball, Judo, Athletics, Table Tennis, Swimming, Shooting, Archery, Triathlon and Taekwondo.
In general, the events of such scale have a profound motivating effect on the economy, cultural life and tourism industry of the country; they directly activate the many-faceted international partnership and have the most positive impact on the development of friendly and business contacts, on establishing the trust- and understanding-based atmosphere between the nations of the world.
Exactly from such positions, the head of Turkmenistan considers the challenges of preparations for the upcoming V Asian Indoor Games and Martial Arts in the Turkmen capital.
Large-scale preparations for the 2017Asian Games unfolded in Turkmenistan are of exceptional value for the development of sports infrastructure and training sportsmen of the country. The Games are a first-ever sport event in the history of Turkmenistan. Therefore, in the Games’ preparation process, the world’s best experience in carrying out such events is actively being studied; and the renowned foreign companies and experts, who participated in organizing of the Olympic Games and other grandiose sporting events, are involved.
Construction in the south of the Turkmen capital of the 157-hectare Olympic Village (about US $5-billion budget) is put on a fast track. In all, the Village will accommodate more than 30 objects.
The invitation of President of Turkmenistan to participate in the opening ceremony of the First European Games is also of particular importance in the development of international cooperation of our country in the field of sports. The 2017-Asian Games will, very likely, open a new page in this collaboration.
The Asian Games-orientation is confirmed by the working status of the national leader’s visit and the composition of the Turkmen delegation made up of the sporting sector’s leaders and heads of the 2017-Asian Games Steering Committee.
